In what felt like an entirely roundabout way, I managed to make it back to the Conklin’s house the following morning. I woke up as early as Craig usually did, and while I pretended to go about my usual morning routine, I knew the moment that he had left with the boys to take them to school – he always took them to school on Fridays – I would be out the door right behind them.

“I’m so glad that you decided to come with us last night,” Craig said as he poured a generous amount of coffee into his thermos, steam lazily swirling out the top. “For a few seconds, I really thought you were going to turn the boys down.”

I reached for the sugar bowl, spooning some into my own coffee. I needed the extra jolt of courage this morning. “I’m not that heartless, you know.” Then my smirk faded. “I just can’t believe that awful man came up and said what he did afterward.”

“I can’t believe what Tim said when he stood up to him,” Craig said. Then he gave me a sidelong look. “So…did you manage to talk to anyone down at the paper?”

I sighed. I knew he’d ask eventually, and it wasn’t as if I intended to keep it from him, but… “Yes, I did,” I said. “Talked to that dunderhead that wrote the article in the first place.”

His face flushed as he tipped a splash of milk into his thermos.

“I’m sorry, Craig,” I said. “I know I probably way overstepped my bounds by going down there at all, and I know you don’t need me to stick up for you. It probably would have been better to just let the whole thing lie rather than going and making a scene.” I paused, swirling my spoon in my mug, though the sugar and milk had long since mixed. “As you can see, I’ve been thinking about this a lot since last night.”

He gave me a smile. “You don’t have to apologize. I realize you were doing it out of love. While you are right that I don’t need my kid sister to stick up for me, I appreciate the gesture all the same.” He scratched the back of his neck. “I guess I really need to step it up if both my son and sister think they need to protect me. I should be the one protecting you all.”

“And you are, and we know that you are,” I said. “I just…let my anger get the better of me, and should have probably stopped to think about it before I charged down there like a ninny.”

He smiled, topping his thermos. “It reminded me of the time you went after that girl who wouldn’t stop leaving notes in my coat pocket at school. You cornered her while I was at practice.”

“I thought you’d forgotten that,” I said in a low voice.

He shook his head. “Not a chance.”

I groaned. “I thought about that too, last night, after I’d gotten home.
